ABOUT THE ROLE

The purpose of this position is to provide research and reference services to firm lawyers and staff in support of service to firm clients and the firm’s business development efforts.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs specialized legal research for lawyers and clients using a variety of electronic and print resources. Projects may include retrieving court documents; locating contact information for individuals; obtaining legal, business, and medical/scientific literature; authenticating cited sources; finding biographical details on judges and counsel; and tracking litigation.
  • Conducts in-depth research in a wide range of practice-specific areas of law, business intelligence, public records, legislative history, and news media.
  • Performs research on and prepares company and industry profiles in support of business development efforts.
  • Delivers basic and advanced library instruction to new lawyers, legal support staff members and other researchers and assists in arranging vendor-led training on various research platforms.
  • Supports the firm’s usage of legal and business databases by securing passwords, coordinating introductory and recurring training, and trouble-shooting technical issues.
  • Provides support for onboarding and offboarding of all researchers, including the firm’s summer and fall associate classes.
  • Provides routine support for and assists on special projects involving the library systems including the catalog, password management and usage monitoring system, work-product retrieval tool, and library-related content on the firm’s intranet.
  • Supports library managers serving as liaisons to the firm’s practice departments by providing collection development assistance, including evaluating information needs, research requests, available resources, and usage patterns. Provides input on addition of new resources and removal of resources no longer needed.
  • Evaluates, uses, and promotes responsible application of artificial intelligence tools to improve legal and business research workflows, including prompt development, output review, citation verification, and integration of AI-assisted research practices consistent with firm policies and ethical obligations.
  • Monitors developments in generative AI and emerging research technologies; assists with testing new tools, documenting best practices, and advising lawyers and staff on appropriate use cases, limitations, and risk considerations.
  • Build dashboards or reports to visualize market trends and resource performance.
  • Assists with collection maintenance duties including the ordering and cataloging of books, routing serials, shelving materials, and, periodically, filing updates and looseleaf materials.
  • Assists with financial management of the library by reviewing and confirming invoices and allocating expenses to the appropriate accounts.
  • Maintains relationships with lending libraries and document retrieval services. Manages inter-library loans with participating libraries.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by direct supervisor and other Library Services Managers.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science with an academic background in Data Science and 3 years of experience is required. Law or professional services firm experience is preferred.
  • Substantial experience using major legal and business databases/research platforms, including Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, Courtlink, Docket Navigator, Questel/Orbit, VitalLaw, and ProView eBooks.
  • Strong familiarity with basic legal treatises, particularly where to find them online.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite. Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new applications and research tools quickly.
  • Experience using artificial intelligence tools, including generative AI platforms, to support research, analysis, workflow efficiency, and knowledge management; ability to evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, authority, confidentiality, and appropriate professional use.
  • Familiarity with legal tech and data management processes is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Power BI preferred
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification scheme.
  • Significant experience using automated library systems. Genie and Research Monitor experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, perform under tight time deadlines, and flexibly adjust to changing priorities.
  • Ability to self-manage.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift boxes of files and books weighing approximately 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry various other materials up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to spend long periods of time working at computer workstation.
  • Must be able to lift, squat, kneel and bend.

Working Conditions and Environment

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office work environment.
  • Regular hours for the position are 10:30am -7:00pm Central, Monday through Friday but are subject to change depending on the needs of the firm. Position often requires hours in excess of the standard work week in order to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
  • Position may require travel to other Firm offices and to attend professional association meetings.

The Research Librarian reports directly to the Library Manager and is primarily responsible for conducting, assisting in, and/or coordinating reference and research projects, as requested by the Firm’s attorneys and clients, legal support personnel, and other law librarians.

Responsibilities:

  • Processes incoming research/reference requests and conducts complete and thorough research, using library resources and informational tools; participates in ready-referencing tasks, including working the reference desk, consulting with library users and responding to email requests; ensures compliance with licensing and electronic subscriptions when conducting research; produces client billable research.

The Senior Knowledge & Research Services Manager will help shape how O’Melveny delivers high-quality legal and business research support to lawyers, clients, and firm teams. This is a visible leadership role for someone who wants to strengthen the firm’s research services, support consistent service delivery, and help the team use research tools, technology, data, and practical workflows more effectively. The Senior Manager will supervise and mentor research managers and analysts, oversee the firm’s virtual request management system, and work closely with attorneys, practice groups, and department leaders to understand needs, set priorities, and deliver timely, reliable, and actionable research support. In collaboration with firm stakeholders, the role will help identify trends, improve service models, support training, and ensure that research services continue to meet the evolving needs of the firm.

The salary range for this role in CA is $190,000 - $250,000 and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.

Responsibilities:

Lead the day-to-day work of the research services function, set priorities, and align services with firm, client, attorney, and practice group needs.

Supervise research managers and analysts and provide clear guidance, coaching, professional development, and feedback.

Oversee research workflow across the centralized and virtual request management system to ensure requests are handled consistently, efficiently, and to high standards.

Monitor request data, service trends, attorney feedback, and practice group priorities to identify opportunities to improve research support, staffing, training, and workflows.

Partner with the Director of Information Services to develop short- and long-term goals for research services and help translate those goals into practical plans and measurable improvements.

Requirements

At least three years of experience managing people, including supervising, mentoring, coaching, and leading a team, is required.

Master’s degree in library science or a related degree is required.

Ten years of progressive research experience in a legal environment is preferred.

Strong knowledge of legal and business research tools, platforms, resources, and research strategy, with the ability to explain them in practical terms.

Ability to lead teams, manage performance, build trust with stakeholders, and meet deadlines in a busy professional-services environment.

Ability to manage research workflows, assess service trends, and use data and feedback to improve service delivery.

Ability to create and support clear training, guidance, and communications for attorneys, staff, and research team members.

This position manages all aspects of legal research and library services for assigned office(s), ensuring attorneys, paralegals, and business professionals receive timely, high-quality research support aligned with client and firmwide needs. The role leads a team of Research Analysts, oversees the evaluation and deployment of electronic and AI-assisted research resources, and serves as a strategic advisor on research tools, workflows, and knowledge management. The position also fulfills research requests submitted through the firm's virtual research system from users firmwide.

The salary range for this role in CA is $130,000 - $170,000 and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.

Note that this position works Pacific time zone hours. 9:30- 6 pm PT.  Fully remote option is available.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for the effective performance of all knowledge and research services within assigned office(s).

Supervise Research Analysts and provide ongoing professional development and support.

Provides excellent customer-focused research services to attorneys and staff, encompassing corporate filings, transaction lists, data and precedents, company and competitive intelligence, biographical materials, regulatory materials, secondary discussions of cases, statutes, rules, accounting materials, docket filings, expert witness materials, litigation analytics and other topics as submitted to our virtual research system.

Advise attorneys and business professionals on the effective use of AI-assisted research tools (e.g., Westlaw Deep Research, Lexis Protégé, Harvey AI, Microsoft Copilot); evaluate and validate AI-generated research outputs to ensure accuracy and professional responsibility compliance.

Monitors legal, regulatory, legislative, patent, and industry developments using alerting platforms to deliver proactive current awareness to attorneys and practice groups.

Collaborates with Electronic Resources team to test, evaluate, and make acquisition recommendations on new electronic products and platforms.
